PWP-Pick List – Week 13 in MLS –

All,

I’m moving some of my Possession with Purpose work to my new blog site; nothing fancy in the graphics department yet but will get there sometime before a new season in 2015 starts.

For now my PWP Pick List and a few other articles will begin to show up here; appreciate your patience!

To kick off this new blog site a remainder on where I stand in leveraging my PWP analysis relative to picking wins or losses; if you recall I will no longer pick draws.  I guess that is a pet peeve of mine, it is what it is…

I can see a team shooting for a draw in knockout competitions but not in regular season games in MLS – unless they are late season and a point is all you need to secure a playoff position.

For now I’m 31 of 59 (started late) for a 53% accuracy rating…

Starting the 27th Sporting KC host New York:  The Red Bulls are a team with three straight losses – two most recently coming at home against Chicago and Portland.  Given that bad run and a number of key players missing for KC (add Chance Myers to that list btw) I think New York wins this…

Chivas at home to Portland:  Chivas are not a top performing team at home this year – one of the worst actually and the Timbers just came off a huge win against New York.    And although the Timbers defense might be suspect their attack is strong and confidence is building.  Considering that and the Timbers less than ideal result, last time at home against Chivas, (recall that late blunder by Zemanski) the Timbers will be wanting ‘controlled revenge’…  Timbers win…

Seattle at home to Real Salt Lake: This should be a good game – but perhaps not great – too many key players missing for both teams but I like Joao Plata – and I like the back-four for RSL better than the Seattle back-four… RSL takes 3 points in Seattle.

Toronto at home to Columbus:  Tough one here – almost a statement game for both teams.  Toronto need points at home and Columbus needs to convince themselves and others they are really for real… tight game but Higuain shines again and the Crew defense throttles Defoe and Gilberto.  Crew win…

DC United at home to a very tired Sporting KC – Vermes will want to win this one but I’m thinking a rested DC can take three points over a Sporting defense that is really hurting – perhaps we see Sal Zizzo in the back-four for Sporting?  Am I really picking Sporting to lose against New York and DC United?  Yup…don’t forget the Revolution beat Sporting KC, at almost full strength, not too long ago.  DC wins…

Montreal at home to New England:  Will Montreal win again this year ?  While New England is a strong team at home they are also pretty strong on the road – I have a hard time seeing the Impact take three points.  Likely they will be happy with a draw but I see the Revolution getting three points…

Dallas at home to San Jose:  One of the worst road teams this year is San Jose, just two goals scored in four games.  Given that, it would be a huge upset for the Earthquakes to take three points – I don’t see it happening – Dallas are not the best at home as Chivas pointed out but they have taken 13 points at home versus 5 on the road… Dallas wins.

Chivas at home to Philadelphia:  Hackworth and his team are hurting – this is a critical game for them and a poor result here might even land some a few folks in hot water if they can’t get three from Chivas.  I’ve been stubborn, perhaps too much, about the Union having good performances without the results showing.  This game is a game where a good performance and good result matter.  Given Chivas is on short rest and Philadelphia aren’t – the Union take three on the road…

Chicago entertain LA:  Another game that could further separate the wheat from the chaff – LA should go into Chicago and win this; possession alone should give them total control and they’ve got a stingy defense too.  Can a counter-attacking strategy spell victory for Chicago; I’m not so sure with Donovan and Keane kicking into high gear!  LA takes three…

Colorado at home to Houston:  Are more road woes due for Houston who got spanked by San Jose this past weekend?  I think so – something isn’t working with the Dynamo this year and they are far better at home (11 points) than on the road (4 points)… Rapids take 3…

Portland at home to Vancouver – A great Cascadia Cup match-up that might see the Timbers coming back home after winning (2?) games on the road?!  Either way it’s hard not to see anybody not getting up for this game…  should be entertaining for 90+ minutes – if the defense can hold Timbers win… if not can the Timbers still win?  For now I’m saying yes since the Timbers are better at home than Vancouver on the road…

Best, Chris
